Chicago, IL: After touring internationally, all over the country and having lived most of his adult life in NYC & LA, Christopher Kale Jones (Star of Jersey Boys & PBS) is excited to settle right here in Chicago’s stunning Lakeview neighborhood, celebrating the homecoming with a 1-night concert & live album recording at Mercury Theater Chicago.

After attending Northwestern University, Chris has always had a heart for Chicago. After growing up as a budding performer in Hawaii, Chris came to life at Northwestern University, gaining the tools to make a career in the arts. When school ended, he headed to New York: “At Northwestern, in those days, the assumption was that’s where you went if you really wanted to see your full potential. So even though I had been fortunate enough to be a working actor in Chicago at theaters like Chicago Shakespeare, Steppenwolf, and Marriott Theatre, I went.”

He lived the better part of a decade in New York City, culminating in a starring turn as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys. Then it was off to Los Angeles, where the past several years have been spent teamed up, ironically enough, with the stars of the Chicago company of Jersey Boys creating the PBS group Under The Streetlamp. After touring the country and releasing three specials on PBS (The self-titled Under The Streetlamp, followed by Let the Good Times Roll and Rockin’ Round the Clock.), Chris and his family stopped through Chicago for the Summer thinking they were headed back to New York. It wasn’t long before the magic of this rich city began to overtake them: the culture, diversity, love for the arts, the city itself, the history, the lakefront, the opportunities for their young daughter, the people, and for Chris, the reminder that this is a city where great things can begin, in an atmosphere of authenticity and warmth. Before they knew it, they were looking for a permanent place to live and exciting ways to get involved in the arts community.

Join Chris as he officially makes his roots here in Chicago with a live album recording of his solo concert DARIN: Live at the Mercury. This project is the producing debut of MidCoast Theatre Company. A joint venture he created with his wife, fellow entertainer, Jenna Coker-Jones. They are proud to present this concert and album recording at Mercury Theater Chicago, less than a mile from their new home.

Blurb:

MidCoast Theater Company presents DARIN: Live at the Mercury, a night of Bobby Darin’s biggest hits, narrated and sung by former Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys, Christopher Kale Jones. This is a rare opportunity to not only see the star
of Jersey Boys and Under The Streetlamp on PBS in his solo concert, but also witness a LIVE album recording of Bobby Darin's biggest hits: "Dream Lover," "Mack the Knife," "Splish Splash," and many more. Pieced together with charismatic storytelling that goes behind the veil of Bobby's fame and brash public life, Darin flows from the poignant to the celebratory, all while delivering hit after hit. VARIETY says "His Soulful delivery... resembles Bobby Darin" & SF Examiner says "His knockout voice...brings down the house."

A Note on DARIN, from Creator, Christopher Kale Jones

Inspired to create a one-man concert, and hungry for a subject to build it around, my mind returned to one of my most memorable reviews from when I had the good fortune to play Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys years ago.

Overall positive, it interjected that I resembled a young Bobby Darin more than Frankie Valli. At the time, I felt slighted that not every audience member was fully convinced I was Frankie in the flesh, but with the benefit of a few years of humility under my belt, I decided to take a second

look. “After all,” I naively thought, “I had always loved the song, ‘Beyond The Sea’...” I began my research in earnest.

Bobby was 5’ 9”. So am I. Bobby weighed 160. So do I. Bobby’s mom was a retired singer who taught him everything she could about
music. My mom was a retired dancer who taught me everything she could about being a performer.

Then there was his voice. Bobby’s voice was bold and reckless. It grabbed you by the neck and let you know it had something to say. It could be tender and sweet, but it was never weak. I was sold.

If you wanted an apology, you didn’t put on a Bobby Darin record. He demanded your attention: ‘Splish, Splash,’ ‘Beyond The Sea,’ ‘Mack the Knife.’ - These were the songs everyone knew. But he dazzled with lesser- tier hits like ‘Artificial Flowers’ and ‘You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby.’

Finally, he lived a life every bit as exciting and volatile as his career: He married arguably the most well-known and beautiful actress of the 60s, he conquered the music world by 25, and he never stopped pushing past his limits, often to his detriment, but always for our entertainment.

So I hope you’re ready to tap your toes as we celebrate the life, loves and legacy of the one and only, Bobby Darin.
